Story immersed himself in flying. Privately, he continued to fly and instruct in a variety of
airplanes,
but with NASA, he became integral to the T-38 activities at Ellington Field. He was both pilot
and instructor in the T-38 and also conducted over 1000 functional check flights for airplanes
just released from heavy maintenance. At odd times he was also known to get involved, informally,
in the maintenance of the airplane, having spent a lot of time in the hangar with the mechanics
and engineers.
From the beginning of his NASA days, Story flew just about every day, sometimes twice a day,
and around hundred hours a month – an extraordinary amount given his other commitments.
By the time he left NASA, he had flown more hours in the T-38 than any other pilot on the planet.
