STS-44 Mission Highlights The crew took part in a variety of continuing medical investigationsof the effect of weightlessness on the human body and methods of counteracting those effects. Among the medical studies was the use of the Lower Body Negative Pressure unit, an often-flown device that uses low pressure to pull body fluids back to the lower extremities, counteracting the tendency for such fluids to rise to the upper body in weightlessness.
